Dental Tooth Extraction

A tooth extraction is the complete removal of a tooth (or teeth) from its socket, located in the bone. Tooth extraction is seen as a last resort by dentists, and we will always do everything we can to salvage a tooth wherever possible.

Why may I require a tooth extraction?

There are a variety of reasons a tooth may warrant an extraction including:

  • Extreme decay: if a root canal treatment cannot mend the degree of decay present, we may extract the affected tooth, to stop it causing pain and further problems
  • Periodontal disease: advanced gum disease can cause a tooth to loosen. A loose tooth may need to be extracted.
  • Crowding: in some instances, teeth causing crowding are removed in preparation for orthodontic treatment.
  • Impacted wisdom teeth: extraction is recommended if wisdom teeth are causing pain, infection or decay.

What is the treatment process?

Before any treatment takes place, we will diligently examine the tooth or teeth in question and its surrounding tissues. Based on this evaluation, we will decide on the course of action that’s in the best interest of your oral and dental health.

Teeth are usually removed under local anaesthetic, though general anesthetic is sometimes used in cases where the patient is a child, or an adult with learning disabilities. Whilst you will feel some pressure as the dentist works to remove the tooth, you won’t feel any discomfort throughout.

The tooth socket is widened in order for the tooth to be loosened, so the dentist can carefully remove it. A stitch may be placed in the empty socket to allow it to heal, you will be given some soft padding to bite down on to help the bleeding subside.

What should I do after I have a tooth extracted?

You will be given clear aftercare instructions to take home with you, and encouraged to contact the practice at any point, should you find yourself unsure of how to care for your mouth post-extraction.

You should avoid smoking, vigorous exercise and hot and cold food and drink in the days after your tooth has been extracted. Try to also get plenty of rest.

We strongly recommend replacing a missing tooth at the earliest possible stage after an extraction. This will protect your gum line, ensure your bite remains healthy, reduce the possibility of tooth wear and stop neighbouring teeth from drifting out of place. Here at Quality Dental Group we offer a range of tooth replacement options including dental implants.
