Crowns

Crowns are small caps that cover a tooth to protect it from further damage and to restore its aesthetic. If your tooth has a large filling, root canal or is significantly worn or cracked, a crown is favourable to a veneer.

How do I know if I need a crown?

Your dentist will be able to identify if you need a crown by performing a thorough examination of your mouth.

A crown will be considered if any of the following apply to you:

  • We may place a crown after a large filling has been performed. This will ensure the tooth is not susceptible to cracks and wear.
  • Crowns can be used to repair broken cusps (the pointed parts of a tooth that break down your food). In cases where the cusps are worn, a crown can be used to restore them.
  • If a tooth has sustained wear due to a highly acidic diet or as a result of tooth grinding, crowns can restore it to a normal and healthy size.
  • The appearance of a tooth can be improved with a crown. In placing a custom-made crown over the top of the tooth in question, its shape and shade can be improved. Smaller gaps in your smile can also be eliminated using crowns.
  • After a root canal to protect a tooth from breaking.

What types of crowns are available?

The type of material used to create your crown will depend on the location of the tooth in question, and your particular preferences. Crowns can be made from metal, metal and porcelain, or uniquely from porcelain – the latter are a great option for teeth that are towards the front of the mouth, as they’re indistinguishable from your natural teeth. We will talk you through the characteristics and benefits of each material on offer.

How are crowns fitted?

  • 2 appointments are needed to prepare and fit a crown.
  • An initial examination of the tooth that will be receiving the crown will be performed and X-rays are taken so we can establish the extent of the damage present. You may require a root canal if there is the risk of infection.
  • Weakened parts of the tooth are removed and it is prepared for the crowning process.
  • An impression of the tooth is taken so your crown can be custom-made by a dental laboratory, as per your dentist’s instruction. A temporary crown will be placed, so you are able to eat as normal while you wait for your permanent crown to be sent back to the practice. This will also allow you to smile without feeling self-conscious.
  • During a second visit, the crown is cemented in place.

What should I do after I have a crown fitted?

Immediate aftercare: for the first few days after your permanent crown has been fitted, you should avoid chewy foods (caramel, chewing gum, bagels and steak, for example), avoid chewing on the side of the mouth where your crown has been fitted as much as possible, avoid very hot and cold food and drink, and floss and brush gently.

Long-term aftercare: you can look after your crown just as you would a real tooth. This means brushing twice a day, flossing at least once a day and attending regular dentist and hygienist check-ups. Avoid chewing on any foreign objects such as pens and ice, as these could damage your crown.

You should care for your temporary crown by:

  • Avoiding sticky and tough foods.
  • Brushing and flossing carefully around the temporary crown.
  • Avoid teeth-staining food and drink.

How long do crowns last?

Crowns have the potential to last for up to 15 years with the right care. You won’t need any specialist treatment to look after your crown, unless it sustains damage or decay. The type of material from which your crown is made will also determine its lifespan – metal crowns are known for being the most durable.

We will talk you through the advantages of each material and advise on which we believe would be the best fit for your unique case.
