3D Scanner (iTero)

3D iTero scanners are state-of-the-art technology, used to take thousands of images of your teeth and gums, most commonly before treatment with Invisalign. They will show the projected outcome of treatment, and allow you and your dentist to see a 3D image of your mouth and teeth from various angles. It can also be used in conjunction with other treatments an example being where braces need to be custom created.

What is a 3D scanner used for?

The most common purpose of a 3D scanner is to take images of your teeth and gums, which are used to design your Invisalign aligners or braces. By taking a digital scan of your teeth, the dental lab will have accurate measurements to work from, allowing them to make aligners or braces that are an optimal match for your mouth and tooth anatomy.

Other uses of a 3D scanner include:

  • They’re an alternative to conventional impressions in the construction of crowns, dentures and bridges.
  • They can be used to design and plan your ideal smile.
  • They can predict what your teeth will look like, before you start treatment.

What happens during a 3D scan?

A 3D scan takes as little as 3-5 minutes to complete, and captures an extraordinary 6000 frames per second. The scan is non-invasive and involves your orthodontist using a handheld device emitting a white light (called a wand), and carefully gliding this along your teeth.

Why should I have a 3D scan?

Taking images with a 3D scan is considerably favourable to manual impression-taking for the patient and the dentist alike. Manual dental impressions are taken using a liquid-based impression material, which can often induce a gag reflex and give an unpredictable result.

As manual impressions need to be sent away, this adds weeks onto the treatment time. It’s also not uncommon for the manual impressions process to result in distortions, which means it’s often necessary to take further impressions before an accurate result is achieved.

Meanwhile, a digital 3D scan is far more accurate, takes less time and is an altogether more comfortable experience for the patient.
