Orthodontics

Orthodontic treatment is the field of dentistry concerned with diagnosing, correcting and preventing misaligned teeth and jaws. This is most commonly achieved with braces or an aligner which work to guide teeth into a healthier and more aesthetic position. A retainer is worn for several months after the aligning part of treatment is complete, to stop teeth immediately returning into their original position.

Is orthodontic treatment suitable for me?

You may be suitable for orthodontic treatment if you present with:

  • Crooked teeth.
  • Teeth that do not meet when you bite them together.
  • Widely spaced teeth.
  • Misaligned teeth.
  • Protruding teeth.
  • An over bite (upper teeth that protrude further than your lower teeth).
  • An under bite (lower teeth that protrude further than your upper teeth).

Adults of any age are suitable for orthodontic treatment, providing they are not suffering from active decay or gum disease. Meanwhile, in the case of children it’s recommended that orthodontic treatment does not start until the majority of their adult teeth have come through.

What are the different types of orthodontic treatment?

Today, patients have a better choice of treatment than ever before.

Choose from:

  • Traditional fixed braces: conventional braces have stood the test of time, as they produce predictable results for patients. These are made of metal and include brackets and wires as part of their design.
  • Ceramic braces: these work using the same mechanics as traditional fixed braces, but instead use tooth-coloured or transparent brackets and tooth-coloured wires, giving them a discreet appearance.
  • Inman aligner: an efficient way to straighten or move crowded front teeth into position, the Inman aligner is a single removable aligner that works in the short time frame of 6-14 weeks. You can take your aligner out for several hours a day to eat and brush as normal, without compromising the end result.
  • Invisalign®: Invisalign® is a set of bespoke transparent aligners which like the Inman aligner, can be removed for certain instances like eating, drinking and brushing. Whilst the Inman aligner is for front teeth and principally for cosmetic issues, Invisalign® can correct more complex structural problems over an average period of 6-12 months.

Can I have orthodontic treatment on the NHS?

Children who require orthodontic treatment and fit the criteria of the IOTN rating system can be referred on the NHS for free. The child must be 16 years of age or younger and referrals can take approximately a year. Each case is judged on a case by case basis though the IOTN (Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need).

What are fixed braces?

Fixed braces are the most common type of brace, used by private orthodontists and those in the NHS. The modern fixed braces of today are more comfortable and discreet than in the past, making them attractive to adults and teenagers alike. It’s also now possible to have a conventional brace with discreet features. Ceramic braces possess either transparent or tooth-coloured brackets and tooth-coloured wires which are custom made for your teeth. So you can feel confident your teeth look great, even if you choose a fixed brace.

The main components of fixed braces are:

  • Brackets: which are cemented to the front tooth surface.
  • Wires: connecting the brackets together and creating controlled tension to guide your teeth into position.
  • Elastic bands: work to produce gentle force that pulls the jaw forwards or backwards, depending on what movement is needed to achieve optimum alignment.

Why should I choose fixed braces?

A lot of the success of orthodontic treatment has to do with patient compliance, and as fixed braces are indeed fixed, there’s no risk of you forgetting to put them back in or losing them, and interrupting the course of treatment. Fixed braces have stood the test of time, with their mechanics working the same way today as they did in the past – only now they’re faster, more comfortable and more discreet-looking.

How do I take care of my aligners?

We will provide you with easy-to-follow instructions outlining how to care for your aligners, and answer any questions you may have. For top results, make sure you rinse and brush your aligners each night with a spare toothbrush (not your own) to keep them bacteria-free. Make sure you avoid eating with your aligners in and store them away in their case to minimise the chance of losing them or damaging them.

Is orthodontic treatment painful?

You may experience some mild discomfort as your mouth familiarises itself with the presence of a fixed brace and its components, such as the metal brackets and wires. This should subside within a few days, though you may experience this again for a couple of days after each time your brace is tightened by your orthodontist.  On the other hand, removable aligners such as Invisalign® should not be problematic in this way, as they are made from smooth plastic and do not need to be tightened every few weeks by your orthodontist.

Invisalign®

What is Invisalign®?

Originating in the USA in 1999, Invisalign® has become a globally renowned removable aligner system that works to achieve the same goals as traditional braces. The transparent nature of the aligners (which are replaced every two weeks by the patient at home) means they’re discreet, so you can feel confident about the appearance of your smile throughout the treatment period.

Why should I choose Invisalign®?

Reasons to choose Invisalign® include:

  • They’re custom made: this means the aligners fit comfortably in your mouth.
  • See your smile before you start: 3D imaging software allows you to see the outcome of treatment with Invisalign®, before it even starts, bringing about a sense of enthusiasm and motivation in patients, right from early stages of treatment.
  • Eat like normal: there are no barriers on what you can eat, as you simply take your aligners out to do so.
  • Easy to maintain good oral hygiene: remove them to clean your teeth just as you normally would.
