What are dentures and do I need them?

21 June 2021

Going through life with a missing tooth can be very traumatic. Whether you’ve lost your teeth due to an accident, gum disease, injury, or decay, it can drain your confidence and affect your quality of life.

Not only are you afraid to smile freely, but missing teeth can cause you to slur your words and stop you from eating your favourite foods, as chewing becomes unbearable. That’s besides your jawbone being compromised as the surrounding teeth slowly shift towards the empty spaces in your mouth, causing periodontal disease and tooth decay.

The good news is that you don’t have to live your life being miserable with missing teeth and low self-esteem. Quality Dental Group is here to make you feel good again and bring back your amazing smile. An effective solution that we recommend is dental dentures, a safe and natural-looking replacement for your missing teeth. Dentures will let you live your life on your own terms with a confident smile, eating whatever you like without pain and having the freedom to speak clearly.’

How will I know if I need dentures?

You can pop in for a dental consultation at one of our practices so that we can carry out a consultation and advise you of the best course of action. If you already have a missing tooth or teeth, it is likely that you need dentures or runs the risk of losing more teeth as they become weaker. If you have loose or moving teeth, that’s a sign of decay or periodontal disease that may require dentures.

Other signs that you may need dentures are severe toothaches that cause discomfort – a clear sign of tooth decay, or red and swollen gums – an indication of periodontal disease. A less obvious sign that dentures are required is when you experience pain while chewing or eating hard foods – an indicator that your teeth aren’t working as they should.

How do dentures work?

During your consultation, we will examine the condition of your teeth and gums and advise if you do, indeed, require dental dentures. If that is the case, you might need partial or complete dentures.

Partial dentures

Partial dentures are a suitable option to replace a portion of your teeth. These rely on your healthy teeth and bone around the denture for support and are sometimes held in place with clasps that we secure. They look just like normal teeth and prevent your healthy teeth from shifting.

Complete dentures

If all of your top or bottom teeth are missing, you might require complete dentures. A complete set of dentures will not only aid with eating and speaking but also improve the sunken profile caused by missing teeth. A complete set of dentures may require a fixative to keep them in place and will require to be removed at night to prevent your gums from becoming sore.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are an alternative to dentures that we recommend to replace missing teeth. Unlike dental dentures, dental implants are a permanent solution for missing teeth. It is a modern alternative that is affordable and very popular. Our dental implants are high-quality titanium ‘roots’ that are surgically fixed into your jawbone.
Each implant bonds with the surrounding bone to create a solid foundation for the replacement tooth and help to prevent bone deterioration at the site of your lost tooth, keeping your facial structure intact. They are safe, comfortable and a long-lasting solution that looks and functions exactly like a normal tooth.
